Mark Topazian, MD
Dr. Mark Topazian became a gastroenterologist after studying English literature at Haverford College and medicine at Yale University. For over 30 years, Dr. Topazian has treated patients and trained gastroenterologists, with particular clinical interest in pancreatic disease, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal malignancies, and therapeutic GI endoscopy. He first taught at Yale School of Medicine and later at Mayo Clinic, where he served as Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Topazian’s Christian faith has shaped his understanding of healthcare practice, sustained him in challenging clinical situations, and brought him fulfillment in patient care. His faith also led him to collaborate with partners in sub-Saharan Africa on medical education and research throughout his career. In 2019, Dr. Topazian and his wife Janet joined SIM USA and moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he teaches at the nation’s two leading referral hospitals. Dr. Topazian and Janet have three adult daughters who are each contributing to making the world a better place in their own way.
